Famed Fish Market Moving to Bronx
A centuries-old New York City institution has moved a step closer to extinction with the official announcement of plans to relocate Manhattan’s Fulton Street Fish Market to an $80-million facility in the Bronx.
Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani followed through on a long-awaited plan to move the hub of the city’s fish industry from its spot along the lower East River in the shadow of the Brooklyn Bridge.
The move was long expected, partly because it will allow fish sellers to meet new Food and Drug Administration rules that bar seafood from being sold outdoors, which is how the market now operates. The city plans to build the new 285,000-square-foot market on 30 acres of vacant land.
