Nothing New About Gay Couples’ Therapy

Regarding “Turns Out the Happy Couple Is Gay” (Feb. 5): Christopher Martell, psychology professor at the University of Washington, is quoted as saying that the new Gottman Institute gay couples’ workshops “are really the first exclusive workshops that can give same-gender couples strategies for dealing with problems.”

Gay and lesbian therapists have been doing same-sex couples workshops all over this country for 30 years, beginning with the ones I did in the early 1970s and have done ever since. My book, “Permanent Partners: Building Gay and Lesbian Relationships That Last,” has been a bestseller in the gay and lesbian community since 1988.
