Florida Fire Grows to 10,000 Acres, Closes I-4
Associated Press
POLK CITY, Fla. —
Firefighters on Monday continued to battle a wildfire that has burned 10,500 acres and closed a 10-mile stretch of interstate highway in a dried-out swampy region of Central Florida.
The wind-driven fire in the Green Swamp had grown from 2,000 acres Saturday night and jumped Interstate 4, a heavily traveled route connecting Tampa, Orlando and Daytona Beach.
The section of highway remained closed Monday because of heavy smoke and fallen trees. It was unclear when it would reopen.
