U.N. Says 1 Million Afghans Face Famine

At least 1 million Afghans face starvation--and many are already dying--because of their country’s long-running civil war and a devastating drought, a senior United Nations official said in Geneva.
Kenzo Oshima, U.N. undersecretary-general for humanitarian affairs, told a news conference on his return from Afghanistan and Pakistan that “a big tragedy” is in the making and urgent international help is vital.
He said he will meet with diplomats from donor countries to appeal for funding.
