Weekend Storms Expected in the Southland

More rain and snow are expected today and Sunday as a series of winter storms continues to invade Southern California.

Forecasters said scattered light showers should start falling in the Los Angeles area before dawn today, bringing about a quarter of an inch of rain before the precipitation starts tapering off at nightfall. Light snow is expect in the mountains above 3,000 feet.

“There should be a little break on Saturday as a weak ridge of high pressure builds in, then some steadier rain and snow on Sunday with the arrival of another low-pressure system,” said Byron Morton, a meteorologist with Weather Central, which provides forecasts for The Times. He said the snow level on Sunday should be about 4,000 feet.

Forecasters said that, although Sunday’s storm looks stronger than today’s, it is too early to predict how much rain and snow will fall before the weather starts drying out on Monday.

Temperatures will remain cool throughout the weekend, with valley highs in the 50s and lower 60s following overnight lows in the 40s.
