Theron’s Career

I found it ironic that a profile of actress Charlize Theron (In the Know, Feb. 12) should appear in Calendar the same day as the first installment of David Shaw’s front-page report on Hollywood spin. Talk about spin! We are told that “Sweet November” is Theron’s “first true leading role.” Huh? What about “Mighty Joe Young”? “Reindeer Games”? “The Astronaut’s Wife”?

The spin that Theron hasn’t yet had a true leading role is necessary to soften the harsh reality that her movies almost always tank. But the more her movies bomb, the more work she gets! She is the worst example of how Hollywood artificially manufactures celebrities.
