Displaying its resolve to punish endemic graft, China on Friday executed seven men convicted in the nation’s largest-ever corruption scandal, state media reported.

The seven were among 11 people sentenced to death in November after the first round of convictions in the massive smuggling and bribery case that touched the highest echelons of the Communist Party.

Among those executed were Wu Yubo, a top customs agent in the port city of Xiamen, and bank manager Ye Jishen, the official New China News Agency and Central Television reported. Names but no titles were given for the other five.

The method of killing was not reported, but China, the world leader in court-ordered executions, usually puts criminals to death by gunshot.
