Foot-and-Mouth Fears Multiply

Fears mounted in Europe that foot-and-mouth disease could have spread across the English Channel, as Germany and the Netherlands began slaughtering thousands of animals imported from Britain.
Germany also decided to close its livestock markets for a week, while Belgium banned the transport of sheep and goats inside the country.
Meanwhile, angry Belgian farmers clashed with riot police in Brussels ahead of talks on the dual threats of foot-and-mouth and “mad cow” diseases to their livestock businesses.
