Prelate Cites McVeigh Case

EVANSVILLE, Ind. —
Executing Oklahoma City bomber Timothy J. McVeigh would amount to honoring a suicide request, Chicago’s Roman Catholic cardinal said Monday. McVeigh’s move to drop all appeals, clearing the way for his execution on May 16, was “an act of despair . . . a request for suicide,” Cardinal Francis George said. McVeigh, 32, awaits execution in nearby Terre Haute, Ind., for detonating the April 1995 bombing.
