Impact player: Marques Tuiasosopo, the game’s most valuable player, did damage in this quarter with his feet. He followed a 20-yard run up the middle on a draw with a five-yard touchdown run that gave the Huskies a 14-0 lead.

Missed opportunity: Down 7-0, Purdue was driving toward a tying touchdown, but stalled at the Washington 45. Then a bad snap sailed over punter Scott Kurz’s head, resulting in a 30-yard loss and giving Washington a first down on the Purdue 25. The Huskies scored three plays later.

Did you notice? Purdue’s Drew Brees was sacked twice in the quarter. He had been sacked only seven times all season.

Key plays: The Huskies’ first touchdown was set up by a pass-interference penalty and a 21-yard pass play to Newbury Park’s Patrick Reddick. A pass to tight end Jerramy Stevens gained nine yards and took Washington within inches of the goal line. The Huskies were so close that an offsides penalty on Purdue--half the distance to the goal line--got them no closer. On the next play, Braxton Cleman took a pitchout from Tuiasosopo and scored easily.

Purdue was looking good on the next drive. Brees completed a pass to John Standeford for 13 yards and another to tight end Tim Stratton for 24 yards to the Washington 41. But another offsides penalty, a three-yard loss by Montrell Lowe and an incomplete pass led to the botched punt. After Tuiasosopo’s touchdown, Purdue got a momentum-changing play. The Boilermakers faced a third and 16 at their 36 when a 30-yard pass play to Standeford got them out of the hole.

Best number: Brees passed for 84 yards (completing four of five).

Worst number: Six penalties against Purdue (for 45 yards).

Scoring: * Washington 7, Purdue 0: Cleman, one-yard run at 5:11. 64-yard drive, 10 plays. PAT--Anderson (kick).

* Washington 14, Purdue 0: Tuiasosopo, five-yard run at 0:40. 25-yard drive, three plays. PAT--Anderson (kick).

SECOND QUARTER

Impact player: Brees got Purdue back into the game, completing eight of 12 passes for 65 yards in the quarter. (Tuiasosopo was four for six for 27 yards.)

Missed opportunity: With Washington’s offense sputtering, Purdue had two drives fizzle, the second at the Washington nine, from where Travis Dorsch kicked a 26-yard field goal. On the earlier drive, an 11-yard run by Lowe, an offsides penalty against Washington and an 11-yard run by Sedrick Brown moved the Boilermakers into Washington territory. But Brown was stopped for a one-yard loss, a pass to Stratton gained only two yards and after an incomplete pass, Purdue had to punt.

Did you notice? The Boilermakers, who had 66 total yards in the first quarter, had 111 in the second. The Huskies were held to a net 17 yards and two first downs in the quarter.

Key plays: The Boilermakers, who were hit with six penalties in the first quarter, had three more in the second and they had to overcome a motion penalty after a pass to Standeford gained nine for a first and goal at the five. A run by Lowe got Purdue back to the five and then Brees’ pass to Vinny Sutherland gave Purdue its first touchdown.

With 1:45 left in the half, Purdue took over at its 42 after a short Washington punt from deep in its own territory. On the first play, Brees passed to Sutherland for 10 yards. Then came completions to A.T. Simpson for five yards and Seth Morales for 15 yards, giving Purdue a first down at the Washington 28. A pass to Sutherland on the left side gained 15, but the drive stalled and Purdue had to settle for a field goal.

Best number: No turnovers by either team in the first half.

Worst number: Purdue finished the first half with 26 yards rushing in 23 attempts. (Washington was no better--gaining 23 yards rushing in 15 attempts.)

Scoring: * Washington 14, Purdue 7: Sutherland, five-yard pass from Brees at 8:12. 90-yard drive, 16 plays. PAT--Dorsch (kick).

* Washington 14, Purdue 10: Dorsch, 26-yard field goal at 0:26. 49-yard drive, 11 plays.

THIRD QUARTER

Impact player: Washington kicker John Anderson had field goals of 47 and 42 yards in the third quarter. The 47-yarder was his longest of the season and set a school record for longest in a bowl game.

Missed opportunity: On the first play of the second half, Tuiasosopo went to his left along the line of scrimmage, then pitched to Rich Alexis, who sped down the sideline for a 50-yard gain to the Purdue 35. The drive stalled, however, and instead of going up 21-10, Washington instead settled for a 17-10 lead.

Later in the quarter, Washington failed to convert a third and five at the Purdue 45, although a punt by Ryan Fleming pinned the Boilermakers at their four.

Did you notice? Tuiasosopo missed a couple of plays late in the quarter because of a shoulder injury.

Key plays: After Anderson’s 47-yard field goal, Sutherland returned the kickoff 51 yards to the 35. Then on third and 11, Sutherland caught a pass at the left sideline for 12 yards. Brees then passed to Sutherland again, this time for 24 yards and a touchdown that tied the score at 17-17.

But Washington came right back. Passes to Stevens gained five and 12 yards. A pass to Wilbur Hooks Jr. in the flat resulted in a seven-yard gain, and then Pat Conniff burst through the middle for 17 yards. But Tuiasosopo was caught for a seven-yard loss by Purdue’s Akin Ayodele, and the Huskies had to settle for a field goal.

Best number: Brees passed for 78 yards (completing five of eight passes).

Worst number: Through three quarters, Purdue still had only 31 yards rushing. (Washington, thanks mainly to Alexis’ long run on the first play of the half, had 123 yards rushing).

* Purdue 17, Washington 17: Sutherland, 24-yard pass from Brees at 11:56. 35-yard drive in five plays. PAT--Dorsch (kick).

* Washington 20, Purdue 17: Anderson, 42-yard field goal at 6:55. 42-yard drive, 10 plays.

FOURTH QUARTER

Impact player: Tuiasosopo, after making a trip to the locker room to have his injured shoulder examined, asked to be put back in. He immediately led the Huskies to a touchdown that gave them a 27-17 lead.

Missed opportunity: Trailing 34-24, Purdue had a chance to get back in it after Tuiasosopo made his one major blunder of the game. After taking off on an option play and gaining 26 yards, Tuiasosopo tried to pitch the ball to flanker Todd Elstrom. The ball was fumbled and recovered by Purdue’s Ashante Woodyard at midfield. Purdue then drove to the Washington 24, but Dorsch’s 42-yard field-goal try went wide left, and Purdue was still faced with a 10-point deficit.

Did you notice? On Washington’s last, time-killing drive, Tuiasosopo ran five yards to pick up a first down on fourth-and-short from the Washington 45. About 2 1/2 minutes remained.

Key plays: There was a quick exchange of touchdowns in the middle of the fourth quarter. Washington went 66 yards in seven plays to take a 34-17 lead, with Willie Hurst running up the middle eight yards for the touchdown. Hurst, who finished with 59 yards in nine carries, had 43 yards in four carries in the drive.

Purdue scored 48 seconds later. Purdue went from its 39 to the Washington 42 mainly on a 10-yard pass to Simpson and a nine-yard pass to Morales. Then Brown went off right tackle and down the right sideline for a touchdown to keep the game interesting.

Best number: No interceptions thrown by either quarterback in the game.

Worst number: Purdue finished with 11 penalties (for 69 yards).

Scoring: * Washington 27, Purdue 17: Elstrom, eight-yard pass from Tuiasosopo at 12:00. 44-yard drive in 10 plays. PAT-Anderson (kick).

* Washington 34, Purdue 17: Hurst, eight-yard run at 7:25. 66-yard drive in seven plays. PAT--Anderson (kick).

* Washington 34, Purdue 24: Brown, 42-yard run at 6:37. 61-yard drive in five plays. PAT--Dorsch (kick).
