5 in Estrada Trial Get Death Threats

The Philippines’ highest judge and four other members of a Senate impeachment court trying President Joseph Estrada on corruption charges have received death threats, the court said. Supreme Court Chief Justice Hilario Davide, who heads the impeachment court, said at the trial that he had received an undated letter accusing him of being “anti-Estrada” and saying his penalty would be death. Davide said the letter was signed “the Filipino people.” He brushed aside the threat. Miriam Santiago, one of 22 senators sitting as judges in the trial, said she and three other senators identified with Estrada’s political coalition also had received death threats.
