The Tuffree Estate, named for its original owners, has become a local landmark on the Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach. Built in 1928, the oceanfront house was one of the first properties on Peninsula Point.

About the house: A Rolls-Royce sat in the garage, and a grand piano stood inside next to a window, but nobody lived in the home for years during the ‘60s, neighbors noticed. The couple who first owned the house had died and their children had moved away. Then one day, a son returned. In the trunk of the Rolls, he trucked in some fertilizer for his mother’s rose garden. Then he restored the house and sold it in 1987. The current owner, described as a young man planning to wed and relocate, has owned the property for three years.

Asking price: $4.25 million.

Size: The house has five bedrooms in about 6,000 square feet.

Features: Every major room in the house, except the basement, has a view of either the ocean, bay, city or Catalina Island. From the fourth-level solarium, there is a 360-degree view of the area. Among the rooms are a library, office and gym, with a sauna and a steam room. The house also has two fireplaces and a hand-painted mural by Orange County artist Robert Crowder. There are patios or decks on every level, and there is a three- to four-car garage.
