Re “Sadness, Cries of Hypocrisy Greet Jackson’s Disclosure About Child,” Jan. 19:

I don’t care at all about the Rev. Jesse Jackson’s affair that resulted in a child being born, any more than I cared about former President Clinton’s numerous affairs in and out of the Oval Office. Nor did I care about former House Speaker Newt Gringrich divorcing his cancer-stricken wife to marry his mistress. Or Rep. Henry Hyde’s “youthful indiscretion” when he was well into his 40s.

Whether you are Democrat or Republican, I just don’t care about your sexual escapades. I only care about your position on the issues that affect me as an American citizen.

When will it come to pass that Jackson has overspent his moral capital? He is an embarrassment to the ideals of Martin Luther King Jr. Jackson is no more a man of religion than is David Duke, a man with equally repugnant racial motivations.

When will Jackson be held accountable? When our culture develops the stomach to make moral judgments without shrinking from fear of being called racist because the wrongdoer happens not to be white.

Is it just by some coincidence that Jackson’s private affair surfaced two days before the inauguration of George W. Bush? Which, as it happens, was the day of a planned march by Jackson. I smell a rat! We do not need to reveal, print stories about or destroy any more people’s lives by prying into their private sex lives. Enough is enough!

Rev. Jackson: Do you know what Gingrich did and where he went? Do you know what Gary Hart did and where he went? Well, they both committed that deadly combination of adultery and hypocrisy, and they both went into oblivion. Go there, Mr. Jackson, and don’t come back.

Now I understand why Bill Clinton thought he had done nothing wrong when he was fooling around with Monica Lewinsky. He was being advised by Jackson.
