RU-486 Review
* Day One: President Bush bans federal funding to international family planning groups, to the detriment of poor and disenfranchised women worldwide.
Day Three: Tommy Thompson, newly confirmed secretary of Health and Human Services, announces that he will initiate a “safety review” of RU-486. What is his real motive here? This pill has been used safely by women in Europe for over a decade and was finally passed by the FDA last year for use by women in this country.
What is it exactly that Bush and his cronies have against women? Of course, safe and legal abortion will always be available to the rich (so the wives, daughters and nieces of the Bush Cabinet will not have to worry). It is only the poor women of this country whose legal right to a safe abortion will be eroded, bit by compassionate and conservative bit.
