Razor Settles Claims Against Scooter Rivals

Razor USA settled patent infringement claims against several kick scooter rivals just before the start of trial, according to court documents. Details of the settlement were not available. Attorneys for the parties did not immediately return calls for comment. In early December, closely held Razor persuaded U.S. District Judge Manuel Real in Los Angeles to bar six competitors from selling scooters that reportedly violate its patented brake design for folding aluminum scooters. The ruling came just before the pre-holiday shopping rush, when scooters were expected to be one of the most popular toys of the season. Razor filed suit against about a dozen rivals in November, the same day the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office awarded the company a patent for its brake design. Several of the defendants settled before Judge Real issued a preliminary injunction, which affected GenX, K2, Titan Inc. and a number of other companies. Razor scooters are manufactured by Taiwan-based JD Corp. and are distributed by Cerritos-based Razor.
