From Times Wire Reports

A senior official of Tanzania’s main opposition party said at least 280 people were killed in weekend clashes between police and protesters on the islands of Zanzibar.

Police denied the report. Journalists in Pemba, the smaller of Zanzibar’s two main islands, said they found no evidence to support claims from the opposition Civic United Front, or CUF.

CUF official Hiza Tambwe said 150 bodies had been discovered in northern Pemba. He added that there were reports that police had opened fire on people fleeing by boat to Kenya.

The CUF had called demonstrations to demand a revote after last year’s disputed elections in Zanzibar.
