Ethnic tensions in Macedonia rose anew after police detained the rector of an unofficial ethnic Albanian university who is suspected of links to guerrillas.

Fadil Sulejmani was detained over his alleged ties with Ali Ahmeti, political representative of the National Liberation Army guerrillas, who began a revolt in Macedonia in February.

Sulejmani’s detention followed renewed heavy fighting overnight. The NLA said it was planning to take more ground despite the arrival Sunday of James Pardew, the new U.S. special envoy to Macedonia.

The university, set up in the early 1990s in the city of Tetovo, has been a source of tension between majority Slavs and the ethnic Albanian minority because the government refuses to recognize it.
