State Contraception

Share

Re “Catholics Lose Court Appeal,” July 3: Though I personally do not have a problem if Catholic organizations provide contraceptive benefits for their employees, they should not be forced by the state to do so. The American Civil Liberties Union, which defended the state’s action in court, claims to be a defender against intrusive government. The ACLU has also railed against what it says is the “religious right’s” attempt to impose its beliefs on the rest of society.

Does the ACLU not appreciate its inconsistency in supporting state action forcing the Catholic Church to fund activities which the church finds morally objectionable or, in the eyes of the ACLU, to paraphrase George Orwell, are all animals equal but some less equal than others?
