Eleven Go on Trial for Crimes Against Humanity

East Timor began its long-awaited first trial for crimes against humanity this week, a landmark move toward achieving justice for violence linked to the territory’s vote for independence in 1999.
The U.N. Transitional Authority said its serious crimes panel has lodged charges against 11 defendants for crimes including murder and forced deportations.
The trial began with the appearance of former militia leader Joni Marques, who pleaded guilty to one charge of torture and two charges of crimes against humanity.
