‘Eye for an Eye’ When It Comes to Child Killers

Share

Re “Man Admits He Fatally Beat 2 of His Children,” July 6:

I am sickened by the almost daily accounts of these monsters who beat their children to death and are not themselves sentenced to death.

Marco Barrera may very well also escape the death penalty if the prosecution cannot prove premeditation in the beating deaths of his 2-year-old daughter and his 5-year-old son.

What does premeditation have to do with it when someone beats to death a helpless, vulnerable member of our society? Our nation was founded under God and under his laws, in particular, “Thou shalt not kill.” The Bible makes no mention of “premeditation” in meting out justice--”an eye for an eye” is the penalty.

Also, what kind of twisted society do we have when our justice system sentences Raul Garza to death for the murder of a Mexican drug smuggler, yet time and again allows killers of children to live or, in some horribly unjust circumstances, go free?

I would like to see a separate set of laws and much stiffer penalties specifically for those that commit crimes against the most vulnerable members of our society.

It’s definitely time for a change!
