“I had a wine the other night with barbecued hamburgers, the ’97 Edmunds St. John Syrah ‘Durrell Vineyard.’ It was very European in flavor. It was the kind of wine where, when you open the bottle, you’re not sure what you’re going to get--it was almost a little off. But as it opened in the glass, it had a wonderful evolution of flavors, it went from roses and black fruit to tarry and black pepper. It was a wonderful wine--a good California Syrah.”
