Greece’s Orthodox Church said it expects that by June 26 more than 3 million people will have signed its petition asking the government to reverse its decision to stop recording religion on state identity cards.

That amounts to more than a fourth of the national population, though some signers could be Greeks living abroad.

Last year, the government promised to remove the religion entry from mandatory state-issued IDs, saying this violated personal privacy.
