Pollution Credits Are Hard to Swallow

Share

“Southland Firms Feel Pollution Credit Pinch” [May 28] was ripe with irony.

“It’s insanity,” a business owner is quoted as saying about his company’s inability to afford to buy pollution credits.

That [some] of “Southern California’s biggest industrial polluters” [are] “getting hit by the spiraling cost of emission credits” isn’t nearly as insane as the fact that a system exists for buying your way out of complying with environmental standards that are intended to ensure our air quality.

More outrageous still is the fact that the South Coast Air Quality Management District jumped in to stabilize pollution credit prices to help the bottom line of these industrial polluters.
