Police pursuing Muslim rebels in the southern Philippines said they had found the bodies of two Filipino captives, one of them beheaded, after the guerrillas escaped from a hospital surrounded by government soldiers.

The two victims, part of a group of 20 people kidnapped by the Abu Sayyaf rebels a week ago from the Dos Palmas beach resort, apparently had been dead for several days. Nine other abductees have escaped, officials said.

Six Filipinos and three Americans are still being held by the rebels, authorities on Basilan island said.
