Europe’s human rights court in France dismissed an appeal by 90-year-old Nazi collaborator Maurice Papon, who said he should be released from jail because of his age.

The former Vichy official was convicted in 1998 for his role in deporting at least 1,500 Jews to Nazi death camps during World War II. He is serving a 10-year sentence.

The Strasbourg-based European Court of Human Rights said the fact that Papon was 88 when he was convicted of complicity in crimes against humanity was no reason to free him from La Sante prison in Paris.
