From Times Wire Reports

Syria began redeploying troops from the mainly Christian neighborhoods of Beirut, Lebanon’s capital.

Hours after the Lebanese army announced the redeployment, a TV news cameraman reported seeing army trucks loaded with troops and supplies heading east.

Syria, which moved in as a peacekeeping force during Lebanon’s 1975-90 civil war, has about 30,000 troops in the nation. Many Christians, chafing at Damascus’ domination of Lebanese politics, have been campaigning for Syria’s withdrawal.
