Hacker Attack Sends Shock Through Cal-ISO

Share

Who’s minding the store? While we sit and ponder the evils of terrorism from without, maybe we should take a minute to look into what is going on right under our noses. “Hackers Victimize Cal-ISO” (June 9) informs us that unknown hackers have been successful in mounting an attack on the computer system that controls the movement of electricity throughout California, and although we are cavalierly assured that the lapses have been corrected and that there was no real threat to the grid, it appears that somebody was taking a nap when it took them, as a “restricted report” says, from April 25 when it began until May 11 when the problem was detected.

Our lives are controlled by computers that are out of our control. I think I would sleep a little more soundly if I knew that as much time and money were being directed toward security for the computers that control our very existence as to the discussions of the missile defense systems of this world--before somebody says “oops!”
