The Irish Republican Army said it will not begin disarming, offering stubborn words at a critical time in Northern Ireland’s peace process.

The precariousness of peace efforts was highlighted hours later as police battled rival Catholic and Protestant mobs early today in northern Belfast. Police called it the worst rioting in the city since 1998.

In a statement to Irish media, the outlawed IRA accused the British government of failing to meet its own promises in Northern Ireland.
