Colorado Town Hopes to Derail Rent Hike

Union Pacific is seeking a rent increase for a Denver suburb’s use of a road on its right of way--a $6.4-million increase.
The people of Aurora are up in arms over the requested $7-million, 10-year rent imposed by the nation’s largest railroad. A series of letters and telephone calls failed to end the dispute, prompting the city to sue, asking a judge to set the value of the stretch of land that’s 100 feet wide and runs seven miles.
A lease was signed in 1980 calling for a $6,180 payment every 10 years, to be reevaluated each decade. No change was made in 1990.
