From Times Wire Reports

Raging gun battles in India’s Jammu and Kashmir state killed 24 people, one of the highest tolls since the government called off its cease-fire in the troubled Himalayan region, police said.

The fatalities included 14 separatists and seven Indian soldiers, police said, and their deaths came amid mounting violence before next month’s summit between India and Pakistan.

Indian forces launched a new drive to flush out separatist guerrillas after New Delhi called off its six-month cease-fire more than four weeks ago. More than 300 people, mostly rebels, have been killed since then in India’s only Muslim-majority state.
