Remember the Children

I was planning to cut out Mark Swed’s review of the Feb. 22 Stravinsky concert performed by the L.A. Philharmonic so I could give a copy to my grandson, who sang in “Persephone” with the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus (“Hearing Stravinsky All Over Again,” Feb. 24).

I couldn’t believe it when I reached the final paragraph and found that he praised the Los Angeles Master Chorale but didn’t even give the Children’s Chorus a mention! What a disappointment for all of the children who did such a fine job on the stage!

These 55 young people began rehearsal in October and worked diligently to master not only Stravinsky’s music, but the language (since “Persephone” is written in French). When so much emphasis is placed on what’s wrong with today’s youth, it seems mention of their participation, as well as words of encouragement and appreciation, are in order.

I pose to Mark Swed the same question my chorister son posed to me after reading Swed’s review: “Mom, he didn’t have to like us. But couldn’t he at least have mentioned that we were there?”

Kids are people too, Mr. Swed.
