Closely Held Cornucopia Is Bought by Heinz

H.J. Heinz Co., the world’s largest ketchup maker, said it bought two closely held companies, including Irvine-based Cornucopia Inc., to boost sales of refrigerated and frozen foods to restaurants.
Heinz also acquired Phoenix-based Central Commissary Inc. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The companies, which have combined sales of about $50 million a year, will be part of Heinz’s Foodservice unit, which generated 17% of the Pittsburgh company’s $9.4 billion in sales last year.
Cornucopia gives Heinz more dressings, sauces and soups, including the Todds soup line. The Central Commissary purchase lets Heinz add refrigerated soups to its product offerings and sell more frozen and refrigerated sauces and salad dressings.
