Kidnapped Mogul Freed in Macao Raid
Security forces in Macao stormed an apartment and freed kidnapped lawyer and businessman Jorge Neto Valente, victim of the most spectacular crime in the enclave since Portugal returned it to China in 1999.
One man suspected of abducting Valente on Wednesday leaped to his death from the seventh-floor apartment. Two others were taken to police headquarters for questioning.
Valente, said to be Macao’s richest and most influential Portuguese resident, had a gunshot wound in the thigh and was rushed to a hospital for surgery. Police said he was shot during his abduction.
