Antimicrobial House Built to Showcase Ideas

AK Steel has unveiled plans for an antimicrobial home, now under construction in Simi Valley. The concept home features products made from AK Steel’s carbon and stainless steels coated with AgION Technologies’ antimicrobial compound, which is said to reduce the growth of bacteria, mold and fungus.

The structure and parts of the exterior will be made of steel, from frame to roof, making it easy to maintain and resistant to fire and earthquakes.

AgION-coated steel products will be used throughout the home in handrails, doorknobs, faucets and food preparation surfaces. The heating, ventilation and air-conditioning ductwork will be made of AgION-coated steel. Non-steel AgION-coated products will be utilized in the home as well.

The 11,000-square-foot home, designed by architect David Martin of AC Martin Partners, will be built on 130 acres in Camino de Robles on property bordering Rocky Peak State Park and Pioneer Park.

“This groundbreaking project sets the stage for the home of the future,” said Richard M. Wardrop Jr., AK Steel chairman and CEO.

The AgION antimicrobial compound is an inorganic material that contains silver--a natural antimicrobial agent that has proven successful in controlling the growth and spread of of microorganisms such as fungi and yeast. It can be used in any product where the growth of bacteria, mold or mildew may be a concern.

The Food and Drug Administration and the National Sanitation Foundation recognize the AgION antimicrobial compound as a safe antimicrobial coating for food-contact materials.
