‘Sacred’ Beliefs

* People in one country force hundreds to change their beliefs, offering the choice of mutilation or death (“ ‘Purified’ in the Name of Allah,” March 13). In another, priceless works of art are destroyed in the name of God. Here at home, the new president admits that Jesus Christ is his favorite philosopher and tell us in his inaugural speech that our country is being guided by a higher power that has molded us in “his image.”

I’m not a Christian. And I’m nervous.

The Buddhas in Afghanistan stood by in peaceful dignity, surviving everything man and nature could throw at them except the bombs of a barbaric few who think they have God on their side. And now, after 2,000 years of watching over us, they are gone forever. We will weep for the next 2,000 years to mourn their passing.
