* Thank you for printing the excellent March 14 commentary, “The Biology--and Destiny--of Bullying.” One suggestion I haven’t seen regarding high school bullying is that of having an ombudsman to whom students can take their problems in full confidentiality.

“Referring to another student as ‘a fag’ . . . would be personal degradation . . . telling a fellow student that you did not approve of his or her homosexuality would be allowed” (“O.C. School District to Crack Down on Bullies,” March 13). What a stupid policy. These are kids we’re talking about here. Like they’re really going to sit each other down and say, “Excuse me, Molly, I wish you didn’t like Sandy, it bothers me so.” Remember the Red scare? This is just like it--a fear of something people can’t control that will end in hysteria. Next thing you know, they’ll be kicking kids out for looking at people the wrong way. This is not the way to go about solving a problem, and I say that from a student’s point of view.
