Edward Donovan; Veteran Princeton Coach

Edward Donovan, 91, who coached baseball, football and basketball, among other sports, at Princeton University for 55 years. Among his illustrious students over the years was Bill Bradley, who went on to star in professional basketball and last year became a contender for the Democratic presidential nomination. Donovan was so impressed with the young Bradley that he became known for selecting his basketball starting five by announcing, “You, you, you, you and Bradley.” Born in Newport, R.I., and a graduate of Holy Cross College, Donovan began coaching in high school. He served in the Navy during World War II and was put in charge of athletics for the Navy training program at Princeton. He taught squash, tennis and golf at Princeton from 1946 through 1998, served as the university’s head baseball coach from 1952 to 1975 and coached the junior varsity football and freshman basketball teams. With his wife, Betty, he wrote a book last year titled “My 55 Years at Princeton.” On March 15 in Princeton, N.J.
