I was disappointed but not surprised that The Times’ endorsement in the 9th Council District smacked of “the status quo” (editorial, March 18). For the record, Public Works Commissioner Woody Fleming is indeed a “bridge builder.” Fleming, the only candidate born, raised and still living in the 9th District, has been endorsed by Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard, Mayor Richard Riordan, Council Members Nick Pacheco and Rita Walters, Miguel Contreras and the L.A. County Federation of Labor and others. Fleming has an unblemished record of public service.

The Times’ knee-jerk reaction to allegations attributed to Fleming reflects a lack of respect for the communities of the district. He has the support of many community and business leaders, block clubs and residents who are keenly aware of his demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and effectively with all members of this diverse district.
