The president of the Miami Herald was named publisher of the San Jose Mercury News on Tuesday, replacing Jay T. Harris, who quit last week in a dispute over parent Knight Ridder’s cost-cutting plans.

Joseph T. Natoli, 45, has spent his entire career with Knight Ridder, first as an accountant in the company’s suburban division and then in various management positions at the Herald.

Tony Ridder, chairman and chief executive of San Jose-based Knight Ridder, said Natoli “seemed like such an obvious choice” for publisher because he “understands the values of Knight Ridder and understands the role of the newsroom and the relationship to the business side.”
