British music corporation EMI has named artist manager Andy Slater president of its Capitol Records label. Slater, who has handled the careers of such acts as Macy Gray, Fiona Apple and the Wallflowers, is expected to start May 1. As part of the deal, Slater had to sell his stake in Clean Slate, a joint-venture label with Sony Music, to Sony. He will report directly to EMI Music President and Chief Executive Ken Berry. Roy Lott, who has run Capitol for the last two years since the exit of label chief Gary Gersh, will return to his job as EMI’s deputy president for North America. The moves come as EMI is in negotiations to merge with German media conglomerate Bertlesmann.
