No Compensation for WWII ‘Sex Slaves’
An appeals court said Japan need not compensate three Korean women for forcing them into wartime sexual slavery because no serious constitutional violations occurred.
The Hiroshima High Court overturned a 1998 ruling that ordered the government to pay a total of $7,260 to the women, who were forced to provide sex to Japanese soldiers during World War II.
The three women and seven other people forced into slave labor filed a lawsuit with the Yamaguchi District Court in 1992, seeking about $3.1 million in compensation. They also demanded an official apology. One of the women has since died.
