Two adults and two children escaped injuries Friday during a fire that destroyed their home in the 26000 block of Via Gorrion in Mission Viejo. No one was injured in the 9 a.m. blaze, which caused $100,000 in damages, fire officials said.

It took 18 firefighters less than 10 minutes to put out the flames. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Garry Layman, education specialist at the Orange County Fire Authority, said the parents and their two children were saved from the fully-engulfed home because of a working smoke detector.

“They make a main difference in these house fires,” Layman said.

The family is being cared for by the American Red Cross, who is providing food, clothing and shelter.

Layman reminded that residents should check their batteries when they change their clocks back this weekend.
