Two people were killed when an artillery shell left over from World War II exploded in a forest in eastern Ukraine, emergency officials said Friday.

The accident occurred when the victims tried to disassemble the shell Tuesday, the Emergency Situations Ministry said in a statement. It was unclear why the two were dismantling the explosive.

Emergency workers found 62 additional shells near the site of the accident.

Ukraine was the site of heavy battles between German and Russian forces during both world wars, and thousands of old munitions are discovered each year.

Meanwhile, 18 old artillery shells were found Thursday in a central park in the capital, Kiev. The shells were discovered at the monument to national poet Taras Shevchenko by workers digging nearby, the ministry said.
