Irvine Co. Veteran Thomas Returning to Head Publicity

Larry Thomas is returning to the Irvine Co., where he served as a key advisor to owner Donald Bren before departing 15 months ago.

Thomas, also a former press secretary to Republican stalwarts Pete Wilson, George Deukmejian and then-Vice President George Bush, told friends in an e-mail that he will oversee corporate communications and play a major role in guiding relations with local, state and national government agencies--a crucial function for the giant development and property management company.

Thomas could not be reached for comment Friday, but Irvine Co. executives confirmed that he will return.

Thomas, who had spent 13 years as a Bren spokesman, was among a large number of top executives who left the Newport Beach company during the past two years, including Gary Hunt, a Bren lieutenant with legendary political influence.

Describing his leave as a chance to “get in touch with my place in the world and with old friends,” Thomas said he was invited back by Bren and Vice Chairman Michael McKee, the second in command at the private company.
