If you’re happy and you know it, you just may live longer.

New research stemming from a 15-year study of aging and Alzheimer’s disease in nuns suggests that a positive emotional state at an early age may help ward off disease and even prolong life.

Professor David Snowdon of the University of Kentucky in Lexington directed the research, which was published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

“Our theory is that negative emotional states such as anxiety, hatred and anger can have a cumulative effect on the body . . . ,” he said. “It feels good to be happy and hopeful. It’s an enjoyable state that produces very little stress, and the body thrives in those conditions.”
