Fetal Protection Act

Re “Fetus Bill Dismisses the Rights of Women,” Commentary, May 6: Christians consider only the Bible’s original Greek and Hebrew texts and not their translations to be divinely inspired. In his exegesis of Exodus 21:22-23, Madison Shockley strategically selects unclear and inaccurate translations to suspiciously deduce what he already believes, namely, that a fetus is not human. On closer inspection, this passage does not indicate that the killing of a woman’s unborn child is to simply be accompanied by a fine. That penalty is appropriate if violence merely causes a child to be born prematurely. If the child actually dies, the life of the killer is also to be taken.
