Withholding Dues From United Nations

Share

Re “House Wants to Withhold Dues to U.N.,” May 10: I am absolutely outraged by the flagrant display of arrogance and hypocrisy by our leaders in the House of Representatives. We were voted out of the U.N. Human Rights Commission through a democratic alliance among members of the European Union and from a concerted lobbying effort by the Chinese. Sounds fair to me. Now our leaders want to bully their way back via threats of withholding dues owed that should have already been paid. France, Austria and Sweden, the nations that won the seats on the commission, are not in arrears.

The U.S. leadership’s arrogant behavior and its shift toward unilateralism must not be tolerated by American citizens or by members in good standing of the United Nations. I can’t wait for the 2002 elections to see all of those Republican heads roll right out of office.
