Rescuers Try to Free Trapped Spelunkers
Rescue teams in Goumois, France, worked feverishly to try to save eight Swiss vacationers trapped in a cave filled with water from days of rain.
The workers pumped water from the cave, near the Swiss-French border, with divers on hand, waiting to enter in search of the five men and three women, all amateur spelunkers 25 to 30 years old.
The last contact with the eight came Wednesday night. Their greatest chance for survival probably rested on whether they had reached an air pocket, said Thomas Arbenz of the Swiss Society for Cave Research, which has 30 specialists at the site. He said there was concern that the group could be suffering from hypothermia.
