Renowned Sarajevo Newspaper Shuts Down
A strike has killed off the newspaper Oslobodjenje, a symbol of Bosnian resistance in World War II and a decade of Balkan conflict.
During the war of 1992-95, the newspaper’s high-rise was reduced to rubble. Journalists worked by candlelight in the basement to produce a single-sheet edition during the siege of Sarajevo by Serbs.
The paper won 15 international awards, but sales later slumped.
Employees and an overseas distributor bought it last year, but problems continued. About 100 staff members went on strike Thursday, demanding back wages be paid and a wage cut scrapped.
