Ignoring complaints from China, the Dalai Lama and Secretary of State Colin L. Powell met to discuss promoting human and religious values as well as the situation in Tibet.
The Dalai Lama, leader of the Tibetan government in exile, plans to meet with President Bush today.
Meanwhile, Powell is due to arrive in the West African nation of Mali this morning to start a four-country tour that will focus on Africa’s devastating AIDS epidemic. He also plans visits to South Africa, Kenya and Uganda before heading to Europe on Monday.
